SNAP Gallery’s annual fundraiser becomes a Paper Wonderland
By Vickie Laliotis
Edmonton — SNAP Gallery may be known for its classes, lectures and mentorships, but this west Edmonton not-for-profit is quickly becoming known for its annual Print Affair fundraiser as well.

Dubbed Paper Wonderland, this year’s event is looking to expand the definition of print art as the gallery prepares to celebrate its 30th anniversary this summer.
“The event is centred on the printed object and features items that push the envelope farther in terms of what print is,” said Anna-Karolina Szul, SNAP’s executive director.
The development of digital media changed the face of printmaking, with everything from fabrics and plastics to sculptural elements now being printed on, Szul said. And since print-based art can be anything made in duplicates from a matrix, the event aims to show people how versatile printmaking truly is.
But aside from educating people on the diversity of the medium, the event is geared towards helping artists gain recognition for their work.
“This is a great opportunity for artists that aren’t represented at commercial galleries to show their work and get exposure,” Szul said. “The work of students is displayed alongside that of established artists, allowing them to gain exposure and sell their work at the same time.”
Last year SNAP Gallery joined the Gallery Walk Association of Edmonton, which is comprised of six other west-end galleries including:
- Bearclaw Gallery
- Agnes Bugera Gallery
- Peter Robertson Gallery
- Scott Gallery
- Daffodil Gallery
- West End Gallery
The focus of this large-scale collaboration is to promote local and Canadian talent, as well as to foster an appreciation for the arts in Edmonton.
“There’s no other place in North America that has such a high number of galleries working so closely together,” said Matthew Hudon, the West End Gallery’s general manager.
“It’s important to promote Canadian art because it’s world class. There’s a great diversity of artists here in Edmonton, and we need to show them support and promote them in order to keep them here.”
Szul stresses the importance of supporting local artists by purchasing original artwork, or more affordable options like handmade calendars or greeting cards, which will both be available at Paper Wonderland this year.
“Choosing to buy a mass print of a famous piece that everyone else has or an original has a direct impact on whether or not artists are able to stay and work in our city,” she said.
“It’s like voting in a way; you get to have a say in what happens to these artists. There is far more power in spending your money that way than going to a big box store.”
If that’s the case, this year’s fundraiser might prove to be a “paper wonderland” in more ways than one.
The event will take place at SNAP Gallery, located on 10123 121 St., on Nov. 26 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Proceeds from the evening’s sales will benefit the gallery’s daily operations, educational programming and exhibitions.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.
The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.
Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

Okay this YouTube video is much improved than previous one, this one has pleasant picture feature as well as audio.
Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

I have to express my appreciation to this writer just for bailing me out of such a condition. As a result of researching throughout the online world and meeting strategies that were not helpful, I was thinking my life was gone. Being alive without the solutions to the difficulties you’ve fixed as a result of your good review is a serious case, and the kind which could have negatively affected my career if I had not come across your web site. Your personal capability and kindness in dealing with all the details was excellent. I’m not sure what I would have done if I hadn’t come upon such a solution like this.
