EDMONTON — The weather held off long enough for a large group of west end residents from the Rio Terrace community to get in a quick bike ride Sunday afternoon.

The second annual Rio Terrace Bike Parade is back and bigger than ever. This year, at the Rio Terrace Community Hall, cyclists were treated to hot dogs, cake, and even a mobile ‘Froster’ crew was on scene to hand out free slushies to the children.

Dawna-Lynne Duffypower, Rio Terrace community league member and co-author of the Rio Terrace community newsletter, helped organize the event with her co-author, Carlene Nohas.

“We asked the community to make a contribution this year, last year we only had freezies,” said Duffypower. “We’re trying to make it a broader community event and small events like this could bring people together.”

Leading the way for the parade was ‘Captain Canada’ – essentially a Rio Terrace community member with a Canadian Flag for a cape and Harley Davidson for a motorcycle. Children and parents could be seen wearing costumes too. Spiderman, Batman, Superman, the Joker and Wolverine could all be spotted amongst the crowd.

The plan is to keep the parade running for as long as the two can ride a bike, laughed Nohas.  The parade has drawn large crowds for two straight years, drawing nearly 100 last year and close to 70 this year.
