Moves and Grooves brings Kindermusik to west Edmonton

CALLINGWOOD — A mother who couldn’t find a Kindermusik class for her son in west Edmonton has started her own studio to cater to the demand for music and movement classes for toddlers.

If you come by Moves and Grooves on any Tuesday afternoon, you will see is a group of parents with their little ones dancing, hopping and singing along to Kindermusik songs in a cozy, sunlit room with walls that are painted a warm red.

Sheena Misenas opened Moves and Grooves at 6104 172 St. in May of 2011, after she couldn’t find a business that supported childhood development in a way that Kindermusik does. She had to take her son to Kindermusik classes in Sherwood Park, St. Albert and the south side, which became troublesome.

“I have a passion for music,” said Misenas. “I wanted to incorporate music and my new love for children. I saw a need for it in the west end. There wasn’t really anything in the west end.”

Kindermusik, which is German for “children’s music,” is a childhood development program that has been around for many decades. The main beliefs of Kindermusik are:

• The parent is the most important teacher in a child’s life
• All children are musical
• The home is the best learning environment
• Music nurtures childhood development

“It’s a music and movement program for 0- to 7-year-olds and based on development of the whole child,” said Misenas. “So using music and movement to develop the brain and body.”

Having a west-end location is a big plus, said some of the mothers participating in a recent class.

“It only takes me seven minutes to get here,” said  Janelle Stephenson, who attends classes with her son. “It’s great. It’s closest to where I live.”
