Western, Raymond take gold at ASAA Provincials

Ross Sheppard high school in Edmonton’s west end was packed for both the men’s and women’s ASAA finals on Saturday.

The Western Canada Redmen Women’s team and the Raymond Comets Men’s team took home the gold medals at the 2011 ASAA 4A provincial championships March 19th 2011.

Sir Winston Churchill Bulldogs vs. Western Canada Redmen
The women  hit the court first. The undersized Sir Winston Churchill Bulldogs, coming off of an electric comeback victory in their semi-final match-up, were up against the Western Canada Redmen from Calgary.

The Bulldogs came out with all the energy they had after winning the semi-final. Guard Jessica Comfort and forward Jessie Bachynski kept the Bulldogs alive scoring the most points for their team in the first half, but Western was able to hold on to a slim lead after the first.

After and energetic start the Bulldogs couldn’t keep up for four quarters and fell to Western with a final score of 57-50.

Raymond Comets vs.Western Canada Redmen

After Friday’s nail biter at Ross Sheppard went into double overtime, the Western Canada Redmen advanced past Harry Ainlay, and earned their spot in the gold medal game in the men’s draw against the Raymond Comets.

The Comets and Redmen traded buckets for the first quarter ending with Redmen down four at the end of one.

Western was caught on their heels in the second, but managed to maintain and stay within five points bring the score to 36-31 Comets.

Western looked good coming out of the locker room at the half playing physical to set the stage for an incredible fourth quarter with a final score of 55-51.

The Comets maintained the lead for almost the whole game and didn’t falter when it mattered most. Western wasn’t going down without a fight, with two minutes left on the clock they tied up the game with a three-pointer.

The Comets ended up taking the gold in a heated final match in a packed Ross Sheppard gym, with the final score 82-76 Comets.
