Britannia Youngstown residents: get that car off your lawn and get a tax receipt

By Pamela Di Pinto

EDMONTON – The Britannia Youngstown Neighbourhood Empowerment Team (N.E.T.) is asking residents to get rid of abandoned or unwanted vehicles from their property in an effort to promote a cleaner, safer community.

“Abandoned, derelict vehicles are a harbour for mischievous, criminal behaviour, and gives vandals/criminals an easy target,” Connie Marciniuk, the community capacity builder for the empowerment team, said in an email. “A clean, well maintained property gives the impression that it is cared for.”

Residents looking to get an unwanted vehicle off their hands can use The Kidney Foundation of Canada’s Kidney Car Program, which will compensate owners for their donated vehicles.

Cars, vans, trucks, SUVs — all makes and models are accepted for donation. The Kidney Car Program will even accept vehicles that are no longer driveable, as long as they have all four tires.

The program will not accept:

  • Vehicles that have missing tires
  • Vehicles that are full of garbage
  • Vehicles that have liens, unpaid parking tickets and/or outstanding debts
  • Vehicles that can’t be accessed by a tow truck

Individuals who donate their vehicle will receive a charitable tax receipt of $100. From there, the donated vehicle will either be recycled or resold. If the vehicle can be resold, the owner will receive a tax receipt for the amount the vehicle is sold for.

Vehicles can be towed away for free, or dropped off at Pick-N-Pull on the city’s west end.

All the proceeds from program go towards the Kidney Foundation of Canada, which works to make a difference in the lives of people living with kidney disease.

Community members interested in donating their vehicles to the program can visit their website at www.kidney.ca or phone 780-453-2288, for more information.
