MacEwan journalism students hit the streets on March 12 -- will you join them?

By Karen Unland

EDMONTON — We’re going to try something a little different here at West Edmonton Local on Monday, March 12, and we hope you can join us in making it happen.

Join West Edmonton Local in capturing a day in the life of west Edmonton on March 12, 2012.

We are aiming to capture a day in the life of west Edmonton. Second-year students in the journalism diploma program will be out from sunrise to sunset and beyond, recording various events and moments in the area they have been writing about throughout the school year.

We have all kinds of interesting experiences lined up: belly dancing, sugar sculpting, zookeeping, art installing, fish mongering and awareness raising, among others. We’ll go shopping and barhopping, weather-watching and sightseeing, beat-walking and firefighting, and anything else we come across on that day.

But we have a lot of territory to cover — from 124th Street to the western edge of the city, and from the Yellowhead to the river — so we’re going to miss a lot if left to our own devices. That’s where you come in.

If you are in west Edmonton on March 12, let us know what you’re doing, seeing or hearing by taking a picture or sharing on observation on Twitter, using the hashtag #WELday. Or you can post on our Facebook wall, or post on your own wall and tag us. Or you can put it in the comments on this story. We hope to gather up all you share and add it to the collection of moments we amass that day. The more you help us, the more complete the picture we’ll be able to paint.

Special thanks to Edmonton Journal multimedia journalist Ryan Jackson for inspiration and guidance in this project. Keep your eyes on West Edmonton Local for the fruits of our labours, and yours.

EDMONTON — A west Edmonton dog spa had its hands full on Feb. 11 after its annual fundraiser surpassed all expectations in its effort to raise money to help dogs in need.

With a staff of 43 people, the Humane Animal Rescue Team’s (HART) Valentine’s Day Dog Wash more than doubled its goal of putting 30 dogs through the grooming process at the Dirty Dog Spa located at 10019 167 St.

In a sea of flying hair, screeching blow dryers and droning water basins, the spa groomed a new record of 63 dogs by the end of the day, and had to turn away another 30 dogs for lack of room in the schedule.

HART raised a total of $2,200, beating last year’s mark by $1,460.

Here’s a look at how the fundraiser went at the Dirty Dog Spa.

EDMONTON — Journalism students at MacEwan’s Centre for the Arts and Communication in west Edmonton participated in an international Twitter scavenger hunt from Jan. 23 to 30.

The exercise not only taught them a little more about the journalistic uses of Twitter and curation powers of Storify, but also led them to learn more about campuses all over the world. Journalism classes all over the United States, in Egypt and in Spain are participating in the scavenger hunt, which continues this week. Follow it on Twitter here.

Here is a collection of their work, compiled through Storify, a social media curation tool:

By Heather Rastas

EDMONTON — Winning Wines Plus started out in 1985 on a $6,000 grant from the Alberta government and a belief that there was money to be made in helping people make wine at home.

Over time the company has given up on wholesaling, but retail is going strong, with seven locations across the Edmonton area, including one at 10120 149 St.

Company owner Marg Pettitt and her husband have seen many companies come and go over the years, as homemade wine has come in and out of fashion.

A resurging interest in microbrewing beer is fuelling sales at Winning Wines Plus these days. The store even has its own microbrewed beer called Alberta Classic Brown Ale.

“There are no simple sugars, it’s all grain and it’s handcrafted,” said Pettitt.

Take a look inside Winning Wines Plus, and hear Marg Pettitt describe a holiday wine that can be made from a kit sold in her store:

EDMONTON — Siabhon MacQueen is a resident of Edmonton’s west end. She was diagnosed with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis in 1995 shortly after her third child was born.

On Dec. 11, she flew down to Casa Mesa, Calif., to receive the Dr. Paolo Zamboni’s controversial liberation treatment, also known as chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency.

The procedure has garnered much attention from the MS community. Many say it should be covered by medicare. Others say it is unproven and possibly dangerous.

This is Siabhon’s story:

EDMONTON — An unusually large number of doves are up for adoption at the Edmonton Humane Society.

The shelter at 13620 163 St. has had 10 doves in its care since Nov. 30, said spokesperson Shawna Randolph. While the Humane Society encourages adoption, she advises that potential owners know the care and commitment needed to take care of an animal before signing the adoption papers.
